This recipe for vegan pita bread is so easy and delicious. I love to freeze the cooked pita bread and heat it up whenever I make hummus or black bean dip. Wowza! So good! You can use this as a flatbread also and put some tasty toppings on it! I love making flatbread pizzas with this recipe! It’s so nice to be able to have fresh pita bread whenever you want it without having to go out to the store to get it. You can sprinkle herbs on it or add garlic, anything you like!

This recipe is made with white flour, however, you could substitute whole wheat flour if you wanted. Be advised that when using whole wheat flour the dough will be dense and less soft. I’ve been working on a whole wheat pita bread recipe that has a softer dough and I can’t wait to share it with you soon. I’m hoping to create a corn-based pita recipe too!

This recipe has coconut milk in it which gives the bread a rich and delicious flavor. You could substitute water or almond milk if you don’t have coconut milk. I prefer to use regular coconut milk instead of reduced fat since the flavor of the bread is more delicious. You can certainly use the reduced-fat coconut milk if you prefer it and you won’t taste much of a difference. If you’re on a heart-healthy diet I would recommend using almond milk and removing the salt. The pita bread will still taste incredible, don’t worry. If you’re practicing the Mediterranean diet you will probably want to go with the whole wheat flour and almond milk combo.

This recipe is for pan-friend pita bread however if you want to bake it in the oven you could certainly do that instead. I would recommend setting your oven to 450° and baking the pita for 7 minutes on a cookie sheet with a silicone mat. If you are frying up this pita in a pan I would recommend using avocado oil and keeping a window cracked. avocado oil (for cooking the pita) is one of the healthy oils and it creates less smoke than extra virgin olive oil when you heat it.

If you’re wondering what to serve this pita bread with I highly recommend serving it with homemade hummus. I have many different hummus recipes including piquillo pepper hummus, spicy kalamata olive hummus, serrano pepper hummus, and white bean hummus. When I go to potlucks and parties I always bring my homemade pita bread and a bowl of homemade hummus. Sometimes if I have the time I also bring my homemade tabbouleh! You’re friends and family will love this pita bread. Every time I make it it’s gone before the end of the party, which gives me a thrill! I have a delicious cream cheese and oven-dried tomato dip that I like to serve with, also. That recipe is coming soon!

Vegan Pita Bread Ingredients (makes 8 pieces)

2 1/8 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1.5 tsp sugar
1 0.25 package of active dry yeast
1/4 cup water
3/4 cup coconut milk (almond milk is also fine)
1 1/2 tbsp avocado oil
1/8 cup avocado oil (for cooking the pita)
extra flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. warm up the milk and water for 15 seconds in the microwave until it is 110°, pour into a mixing bowl
  2. pour the yeast, sugar, and avocado oil into the mixing bowl and stir, cover with a cloth and let it rest for 5-10 minutes to activate the yeast (it should be bubbly looking if the yeast activated properly)
  3. add the flour and salt to the mixing bowl and combine to form a sticky dough
  4. cover with a damp cloth kitchen towel and set aside for 45 minutes (dough should be doubled in size)
  5. dust the dough with flour and cut it into 8 even pieces, knead, and roll out into 8 round discs
  6. brush some avocado oil onto a crepe pan and turn the heat on medium-high, flip the bread every 30 seconds until it starts to puff up and has dark brown spots on it, brush each side with avocado oil as you flip
  7. serve!
