I love to make spicy grits with brown sugar ham as a breakfast side. I always have leftover ham after Christmas and Easter and I’ve found this is a delicious way to use that ham up! This dish is very easy to make and can be served any time of day. It’s a bit spicy, so leave out the cayenne if you’re not a fan of heat! Please let me know how you like this recipe! Xoxo

Spicy Grits with Ham Ingredients

8 packs of instant grits (224 grams)
4 cups of water
2 pieces of pre-cooked brown sugar ham (spiral ham)
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp salt
pinch of fresh ground pepper (a few turns of the pepper grinder)
1/4 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
4 tsp coconut cream or almond milk
4 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. boil 4 cups of water and turn off the burner
  2. pour 8 packs of instant grits into a bowl and then slowly pour into the pot of water, stir vigorously as you pour
  3. Add the remaining ingredients to the grits & stir until combined
  4. heat the grits on high for about 30 seconds to ensure they are warm and bubbing
  5. pour the grits into two soup bowls
  6. cut the ham into chunks, and cook on medium-high heat in a skillet or crepe pan until hot
  7. place it on top of the bowl of grits
  8. garnish with green onion, fresh ground pepper & a piece of toast

Tips: To keep the grits from clumping stir them in very quickly as the water starts to boil and keep the spoon stirring the entire time you pour them into the water
