This recipe for how to make black bean burgers is easy and delicious. The flavor is surprisingly similar to a real burger even though this dish is 100% vegetarian. These go great on a bun with lettuce, onion & tomato but could also be served with eggs!
Ingredients (serves 2-4)
1.5 cups canned whole black beans, rinsed and drained (I used La Costeña brand)
1/2 cup bread crumbs + 1/4 cup to dip the burgers in before cooking
1/2 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 tbsp teriyaki sauce
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp Italian seasoning
1 tsp brown sugar
1/2 tsp onion powder
2 eggs
olive oil for cooking the burgers
Instructions
- Place 1/4 cup of breadcrumbs in a bowl and set aside
- Pour all remaining ingredients into a medium sized bowl and mix until well combined (it should look a little like chocolate chip cookie dough)
- Divide the bean mixture into 4 balls and create disc-shaped patties which look like the shape of a hamburger
- Pour a few tablespoons of olive oil into a crepe pan or skillet and cook the burgers on medium high heat until brown on both sides
- Microwave the burgers for 3 minutes
- Pour a little more olive oil into the crepe pan or skillet and brown them a little bit darker on each side
- Serve on a bun with your favorite condiments or serve plain with eggs on the side
Tips: I like to microwave these to make certain that all of the egg in the black bean burgers has been fully cooked. These burgers are a bit dense and could certainly be divided into smaller amounts and cooked to be thinner and crispier. It all depends on your preference. If you’re looking for something that resembles a hamburger in a restaurant you will love this recipe. And, it’s vegetarian!
